Code Requirements: What the IRC Actually Says

Joists and trusses are regulated differently, and the difference shows up in your permit set.

Joists are sized from published tables

Floor joists are selected from IRC Tables R502.3.1(1) and R502.3.1(2) based on species, grade, depth, spacing and load. Table R502.3.1(1) covers sleeping areas and attics reached by fixed stairs at 30 psf live and 20 psf dead. No outside engineer is needed as long as you stay inside the table.

Trusses require sealed design drawings

Under IRC R802.10.1 and R502.11, truss design drawings must be submitted to the building official and approved before installation, and a copy must ship with the trusses. Each drawing must show:

  • Slope or depth, span and spacing
  • Location of all joints and required bearing widths
  • Top and bottom chord live and dead loads plus concentrated loads

Bracing is a code requirement, not an option

IRC R802.10.3 requires trusses to be braced against rotation and for lateral stability per the construction documents. Where the documents are silent, the code points to the SBCA Building Component Safety Information (BCSI) guide as accepted industry practice.

Never cut a truss. IRC R802.10.4 and R502.11.3 prohibit cutting, notching, drilling, splicing or altering truss members without approval from a registered design professional. Hurricane states: Florida and the Gulf Coast
